Tellie’s Training Tips: The Tale of the “Uncomfortably Birdy” Park!
Let me tell you about one of my strangest dog pick-ups at what I fondly call “the park with the uncomfortable amount of birds.” And it’s no joke—this park is like the official meeting spot for every bird in the county! Anyway, here’s why it’s forever etched in my mind…
So, there I was, chatting with an owner while handling a dog we were picking up, when a rogue bird swoops down straight at us. And not just a flyby—no, this bird practically dive-bombed right into the dog’s mouth! The dog, thinking all its birthdays had come at once, was thrilled. I’m holding onto this excited dog who now has a very surprised bird clamped in its jaws, and I’m trying to convince him to “drop” his unexpected prize. I manage to get him to release it, and we put this bird off to a nearby bush. Crisis averted… or so I thought.
Would you believe, within seconds, that same bird takes off and swoops down again, right back into the dog’s path! Round two. This dog is over the moon, thinking this bird is the best chew toy he’s ever had! Thankfully, the bird escapes again, entirely unharmed, though maybe not the sharpest beak in the flock.
The dog was all fired up and ready for another round, but the bird finally got the hint and flew off for good. To this day, I wonder about that daredevil bird. Not the brightest, but definitely the luckiest!
